Ί ³ ³Ί Album : Unsung Heroes Label : Spinefarm Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ensiferum weren't necessarily the first band out Ί ³ ³Ί of the epic/folk gate, but they're probably the Ί ³ ³Ί best, or at least the most consistent. One jaunt Ί ³ ³Ί through 2009's thoroughly captivating From Afar Ί ³ ³Ί supports that notion, as the Finns were able to Ί ³ ³Ί brandish a mighty sonic sword that kept the Ί ³ ³Ί speed on 10, the jovial acoustics 'a hustling, Ί ³ ³Ί and above all else, managed to bring a sort of Ί ³ ³Ί mild sophistication to a style that is usually Ί ³ ³Ί anything but. Essentially, Ensiferum doesn't Ί ³ ³Ί play the stupid, folk metal game, and on Unsung Ί ³ ³Ί Heroes (their sixth overall), they manage to Ί ³ ³Ί stay the course with sterling results. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The clean vocal work of guitarist/founding Ί ³ ³Ί member Markus Toivonen and bassist Sami Hinkka Ί ³ ³Ί come across as the early, defining element here. Ί ³ ³Ί While the triumphant, trumpet-pumping bravado of Ί ³ ³Ί lead cut "In My Sword I Trust" is standard Ί ³ ³Ί Ensiferum fare, the melodic vocals of Toinoven Ί ³ ³Ί and Hinkka congeal with the band's sound in ways Ί ³ ³Ί they haven't quite fully exploited until now. Ί ³ ³Ί The title track and especially "Burning Leaves" Ί ³ ³Ί benefit most from their inclusion, adding a sort Ί ³ ³Ί of power metal but not power metal angle to the Ί ³ ³Ί proceedings. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί A vast portion of these songs don't seek out a Ί ³ ³Ί great deal of bombastic glory, preferring to Ί ³ ³Ί hitch their wagons to sturdy riffs and buoyant Ί ³ ³Ί melodies. "Last Breath" is perhaps the most Ί ³ ³Ί telling of this, as the band's trademark riff Ί ³ ³Ί style pumps out a few noticeable gems, Ί ³ ³Ί especially in the song's chorus. And perhaps as Ί ³ ³Ί a way to prove they still want to go the epic Ί ³ ³Ί route, album closer "Passion, Proof, Power" Ί ³ ³Ί clocks in at nearly 17 minutes, complete with Ί ³ ³Ί vast choirs, thus resonating as the album's most Ί ³ ³Ί adventurous and tried-and-true moment. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Considering the only real competition Ensiferum Ί ³ ³Ί has is Eluveitie and Tyr, they appear more than Ί ³ ³Ί willing to settle into their mid-years as a Ί ³ ³Ί reliable, take-no-chances ensemble. Unsung Ί ³ ³Ί Heroes doesn't have the sort of boundless energy Ί ³ ³Ί its predecessor has, yet it's the kind of album Ί ³ ³Ί that spews quality, and it's quite possible we Ί ³ ³Ί underscored this one. The Finns strike us as a Ί ³ ³Ί friendly bunch, so there's no real concern about Ί ³ ³Ί taking an arrow (or ax) to one's blindside.
