There's been an abundance of Ί ³ ³Ί reunion concerts to satisfy the public's need Ί ³ ³Ί for a return to arena rock, and UFO is one of Ί ³ ³Ί the bands that actually have never taken too Ί ³ ³Ί long of a break since forming in 1969. The Ί ³ ³Ί British rockers are back in 2009 with a new CD Ί ³ ³Ί The Visitor, which once again takes a small step Ί ³ ³Ί away from their 1970's catalogue primarily Ί ³ ³Ί because of Vinnie Moore's guitar work. Since Ί ³ ³Ί replacing Michael Schenker a few years back, Ί ³ ³Ί Moore has actually brought a fresh, intriguing Ί ³ ³Ί quality to UFO, even when the base songwriting Ί ³ ³Ί isn't anything out of the ordinary. The Visitor Ί ³ ³Ί marks UFO's 20th studio album, and in many ways Ί ³ ³Ί it gives a nod to the bluesmen who inspired the Ί ³ ³Ί legendary rock bands of the 1970's. The opening Ί ³ ³Ί track Saving Me starts things out beautifully Ί ³ ³Ί with its delta-blues intro, fueled by Moore's Ί ³ ³Ί acoustic slide work. It quickly morphs into an Ί ³ ³Ί outright rock number, but there's a grittiness Ί ³ ³Ί that pulls you in. Original vocalist Phil Mog Ί ³ ³Ί still has chops, although his delivery might not Ί ³ ³Ί be quite as vibrant as his early work. The blues Ί ³ ³Ί sound rears its head in the vast majority of the Ί ³ ³Ί 10-track CD, with Saving Me and the later track Ί ³ ³Ί Rock Ready are the most faithful to the genre. Ί ³ ³Ί Moore's hand is heavy in a good deal of The Ί ³ ³Ί Visitor, and thankfully so. His mastery at Ί ³ ³Ί combining beautiful lead lines and grooving Ί ³ ³Ί rhythms is what elevates The Visitor to a Ί ³ ³Ί different level. Living Proof shows the band at Ί ³ ³Ί its collective best, not to mention that it Ί ³ ³Ί combines all the best elements of Moore's Ί ³ ³Ί playing. Of course, it's hard to ignore the Ί ³ ³Ί solos, which abound on the CD particularly when Ί ³ ³Ί you compare it to most of the other rock albums Ί ³ ³Ί out today. Moore brings us back to the 1980's in Ί ³ ³Ί that sense, and it is actually quite refreshing Ί ³ ³Ί to hear the songs take a completely different Ί ³ ³Ί path once Moore lays down his solo. I'd be very Ί ³ ³Ί hard-pressed to single out the best solo on The Ί ³ ³Ί Visitor, as they are all actually quite Ί ³ ³Ί impressive. The songwriting might not be the Ί ³ ³Ί most innovative and in many ways hearkens back Ί ³ ³Ί to 1980's metal, but UFO's new material is a lot Ί ³ ³Ί more interesting than some other classic rock Ί ³ ³Ί bands out there that have attempted to recreate Ί ³ ³Ί their original sound. Granted, Michael Schenker Ί ³ ³Ί is a force of nature in his own right, and it's Ί ³ ³Ί very possible that the guitarist would have Ί ³ ³Ί matched creativity with Moore. Even so, at the Ί ³ ³Ί age of 44, Moore is outstandingly at the top of Ί ³ ³Ί his game. // 8 Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Lyrics: It was mentioned earlier that many of Ί ³ ³Ί the songs on The Visitor have a 1980's metal Ί ³ ³Ί vibe, and the lyrics tend to follow suit. Ί ³ ³Ί There's a good deal of your run-of-the-mill rock Ί ³ ³Ί topics whether that includes being a renegade Ί ³ ³Ί (Villains & Thieves) or how there will be hell Ί ³ ³Ί to pay (Stranger In Town) but the content is Ί ³ ³Ί enjoyable for the most part. The ballad Forsaken Ί ³ ³Ί takes more of a serious, sentimental turn, but Ί ³ ³Ί it's usually the bluesier, rawer tracks that are Ί ³ ³Ί the most memorable. // 7 Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Overall Impression: The Visitor shows UFO at Ί ³ ³Ί its most blues-driven, and the addition of Ί ³ ³Ί acoustic slide is perfect. Everyone in the band Ί ³ ³Ί is a quality player, but it's hard for Vinnie Ί ³ ³Ί Moore to not become the main focus of each Ί ³ ³Ί track. The guitarist just has a keen sense of Ί ³ ³Ί adding textures/tones to the tracks, and that Ί ³ ³Ί saves a few tracks on the record from being just Ί ³ ³Ί mediocre.
