In addition, it is the first º ³ ³º Kamelot album to feature original Sean Tibbetts, º ³ ³º who had left the band during its early years but º ³ ³º has recently returned to replace his old º ³ ³º replacement Glenn Barry. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º As previously mentioned, this is easily the º ³ ³º band's most experimental album to date and may º ³ ³º be rather difficult to classify as a power metal º ³ ³º album. There are still a few familiar moments of º ³ ³º this nature on tracks such as If Tomorrow Came º ³ ³º and Once Upon a Time, but even these only seem º ³ ³º to last for rather short periods of time and º ³ ³º soon way to slower flourishes. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Instead, the gothic elements of the past few º ³ ³º albums have been expanded even more as songs are º ³ ³º built around mid-tempo riffs, memorable º ³ ³º choruses, and dark atmospheres. Of these tracks, º ³ ³º opener and leading single The Great Pandemonium º ³ ³º is the most memorable thanks to its bass driven º ³ ³º verses, infectious chorus, and liberal use of º ³ ³º harsh and whispered vocals. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Also worth noting are the slower tracks such as º ³ ³º House On A Hill as well as the epic title song º ³ ³º that spans over four separate tracks. The º ³ ³º latter's divisions are somewhat unnecessary in º ³ ³º comparison to the band's previous suites, but º ³ ³º they do not detract from this particular suite's º ³ ³º quality. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Despite the changes that have been implemented, º ³ ³º the album's actual overall structure doesn't º ³ ³º stray too far from past efforts. The Great º ³ ³º Pandemonium recalls a cross between March of º ³ ³º Mephisto and Rule the World, If Tomorrow Came º ³ ³º plays out like a more electronic version of º ³ ³º Ghost Opera's title track, the Poetry for the º ³ ³º Poisoned suite reminds one of Momento Mori and º ³ ³º the Elizabeth trilogy from Karma, and the º ³ ³º closing Once Upon A Time is a more toned down º ³ ³º version of Serenade and Eden Echo. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º While the structure may lead some listeners to º ³ ³º wonder if the band is merely repeating º ³ ³º themselves, the use of this familiar motif does º ³ ³º help to make some of the more unconventional º ³ ³º elements easier to digest. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º With all this going on, the band puts on an º ³ ³º overall competent performance. The various º ³ ³º keyboards and sound effects provide a great deal º ³ ³º of atmosphere without getting in the way of the º ³ ³º other instruments and the rhythm section gets º ³ ³º plenty of chances to shine along the way. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Founding guitarist Thomas Youngblood may be one º ³ ³º of the band's leading members, but the guitars º ³ ³º on this album are somewhat underwhelming as they º ³ ³º are mostly based around mid-tempo chugs and º ³ ³º fairly simple solos. However, the riffs º ³ ³º themselves are effectively composed and fit the º ³ ³º songs better than any faster outbursts would. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º But like all the other Kamelot albums that have º ³ ³º come out since Siege Perilous, vocalist Roy Khan º ³ ³º is the band's strongest member and carries the º ³ ³º songs well with his commanding presence. He also º ³ ³º shows a lot of variety as he whispers, wails, º ³ ³º croons and processes his voice to great effect. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Speaking of vocalists, this album follows the º ³ ³º tradition of recent Kamelot albums featuring a º ³ ³º great slew of guest performers. In addition to º ³ ³º the expected contributions by the talented º ³ ³º Simone Simmons of Epica, we also see some º ³ ³º appearances from other great figures in the º ³ ³º power and extreme metal genres. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Of all these appearances, the contribution made º ³ ³º by Jon Oliva of Savatage on The Zodiac is the º ³ ³º most exciting as the song is greatly º ³ ³º strengthened by his demonic snarls. The cameo º ³ ³º appearance by Bjorn Strid of Soilwork on The º ³ ³º Great Pandemonium is pretty cool as it echoes º ³ ³º the March of Mephisto's sentiments quite nicely. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º In a way similar to Iron Maiden's recent º ³ ³º material, this is an album that may be a little º ³ ³º harder to get into than previous Kamelot º ³ ³º releases overall and has potential to be an even º ³ ³º controversial effort than Ghost Opera. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º It is hard to say where it can placed in the º ³ ³º band's overall discography, but it is another º ³ ³º great release that continues the band's tendency º ³ ³º to intrigue, confuse, and ultimately satisfy º ³ ³º listeners of various genres.
