Then, about º ³ ³º as quickly as they had broken their own mold º ³ ³º with the powerful Neverworld's End, Xandria º ³ ³º seemed to be destined to an early fall with the º ³ ³º loss of their gifted dramatic soprano front º ³ ³º woman Manuela Kraller, reminiscent of the º ³ ³º similar fate that befell their inspiration º ³ ³º Nightwish back in the mid 2000s with the exit of º ³ ³º Tarja Turunen. However, history can prove to be º ³ ³º an invaluable teacher, and it appears that Marco º ³ ³º Heubaum was doing his homework as he didn't fall º ³ ³º into the trap of trying to revamp a working º ³ ³º formula and found another winning dramatic voice º ³ ³º in Dianne van Giersbergen, who is also quite º ³ ³º similar in vocal timbre and range to that of the º ³ ³º much emulated Tarja. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º For all the fairly different imagery depicted on º ³ ³º Sacrificium, this is an album that exemplifies º ³ ³º that age-old truism of not messing with a º ³ ³º winning formula. Naturally there has been some º ³ ³º tinkering around the edges in terms of the º ³ ³º album's flow and pacing, but the same stylistic º ³ ³º devices of simple driving guitar riffs, massive º ³ ³º orchestral sounds, and a well-balanced mixture º ³ ³º of haunting dissonance and somber beauty has º ³ ³º remained constant almost to a fault. Some of º ³ ³º this tinkering presents itself in a slightly º ³ ³º greater concentration of guitar elements that º ³ ³º point towards more of an Epica influence, though º ³ ³º Marco's riff approach still remains closer to º ³ ³º the support-role character of Emppu's work with º ³ ³º Nightwish rather than morphing into a galloping º ³ ³º semi-thrashing character befitting of Mark º ³ ³º Jansen. It's all a matter of degrees and this º ³ ³º still sticks pretty close to home. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º At first listen, there is a temptation to view º ³ ³º this album as being a bit more intense than its º ³ ³º predecessor, and there is some truth to this. On º ³ ³º the more extreme end of things on this album is º ³ ³º "Betrayer", which takes far further strides º ³ ³º towards thrashing it up in the riff department, º ³ ³º and even takes an occasion to throw in a nice º ³ ³º chaotic blast section, clearly eclipsing the º ³ ³º otherwise aggressive character of "Soulcrusher", º ³ ³º the equivalent song from the previous album. º ³ ³º Likewise, this album opens things up on a º ³ ³º particularly auspicious note with a massive 10 º ³ ³º minute plus epic of a title song, incorporating º ³ ³º the same sort of nuanced interplay between piano º ³ ³º driven balladry and rapid paced symphonic power º ³ ³º metal majesty that would go with a classic º ³ ³º Nightwish epic such as "Beauty Of The Beast" and º ³ ³º "FantasMic", but presented in a manner more º ³ ³º along the lines of a darker, heavier anthem off º ³ ³º of Once. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º If there is a way of truly differentiating this º ³ ³º album from its predecessor, it would be by º ³ ³º taking note of the heavier degree of power metal º ³ ³º elements at play than before, to the point of º ³ ³º mirroring what was heard on Wishmaster and º ³ ³º Decipher. Particularly when noting the heavier º ³ ³º degree of more driving, up tempo numbers like º ³ ³º "Until The End", "Stardust", and "Little Red º ³ ³º Relish", all of which almost want to cross over º ³ ³º into Rhapsody Of Fire territory and definitely º ³ ³º point to that wondrous marriage of Danny Elfman º ³ ³º styled lullaby symphonic devices with up tempo º ³ ³º metallic cruising. Be this as it may, there are º ³ ³º still plenty of nods to the same sort of mid º ³ ³º 2000s character that was all over Neverworld's º ³ ³º End, with the most obvious example being the º ³ ³º down-tempo homage to Nightwish's "Nemo" that is º ³ ³º "Dreamkeeper", which actually manages to be a º ³ ³º bit more formulaic and catchy than the former, º ³ ³º yet also better given the superior production º ³ ³º job and balance of instruments into a more º ³ ³º harmonious whole. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º In spite of losing a very charismatic and º ³ ³º competent lead vocalist, Xandria have actually º ³ ³º managed to maintain their hold on musical º ³ ³º greatness here and also proved that provided a º ³ ³º similar sound is maintained, that it's the º ³ ³º compositional element that truly makes or breaks º ³ ³º a band. This is the sort of album that will find º ³ ³º an all too welcoming home amongst fans of female º ³ ³º fronted symphonic metal, and is actually a cut º ³ ³º above most of what's been coming out of the º ³ ³º older guard in the past few years.
