The band º ³ ³º began to right the ship with The System Has º ³ ³º Failed before a brilliant return to form with º ³ ³º United Abominations and Endgame. Th1rt3en was a º ³ ³º bit of a mixed bag and Super Collider, while not º ³ ³º as bad as most would have you believe, was a bit º ³ ³º of a disappointment. At this stage in their º ³ ³º career, most fans were ready to write off º ³ ³º Megadeth as washed-up and past their prime. º ³ ³º However, with Kiko Loureiro of Angra and Chris º ³ ³º Adler of Lamb of God replacing Chris Broderick º ³ ³º and Shawn Drover, respectively, and Dave º ³ ³º Mustaine’s assertion that he would never write º ³ ³º another commercial-oriented album again, it º ³ ³º seemed that big changes were coming for º ³ ³º Megadeth. And were they ever, as Dystopia º ³ ³º already ranks among Megadeth’s best. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º While Super Collider and Th1rt3en acted more as º ³ ³º attempts to get mainstream radio play, thrash is º ³ ³º the name of the game for Dystopia. This never º ³ ³º more evident than on the opening track The º ³ ³º Threat is Real. Easily the fastest song on the º ³ ³º album, the riffs are intense, blistering, and º ³ ³º unrelenting. Although the band has maintained º ³ ³º that they will never release another Rust in º ³ ³º Peace, Dystopia gives more than a few nods to º ³ ³º that classic release. Both the title track and º ³ ³º Fatal Illusion feature melody changes in the º ³ ³º bridge and the guitar work between Dave and Kiko º ³ ³º is reminiscent of the glory days with Marty º ³ ³º Friedman. Other nods to past Megadeth songs º ³ ³º include Bullet to the Brain, which is º ³ ³º reminiscent of In My Darkest Hour and Post º ³ ³º American World, which is basically a darker º ³ ³º version of Symphony of Destruction. The middle º ³ ³º of the album actually features some of º ³ ³º Megadeth’s darkest material to date, culminating º ³ ³º in the heaviest song, Poisonous Shadows. Though º ³ ³º the song features orchestral arrangements and a º ³ ³º haunting piano outro, the riffs are almost º ³ ³º overpowering. Conquer or Die is a brief but º ³ ³º serviceable instrumental, Lying in State chugs º ³ ³º with the utmost urgency, and The Emperor is an º ³ ³º interesting yet successful attempt at a more º ³ ³º mainstream sound. Rounding out the album is a º ³ ³º cover of Foreign Policy by the punk band Fear. º ³ ³º Like Judas Priest, Megadeth has always done a º ³ ³º commendable job in adding their own unique twist º ³ ³º to covers, and Foreign Policy is no exception. º ³ ³º Whether the music is fast and thrashy or heavy º ³ ³º and mid-pace, Megadeth absolutely delivers. Dave º ³ ³º Ellefson remains as reliable as ever on the bass º ³ ³º and even provides a cool solo on Fatal Illusion, º ³ ³º while Chris Adler’s drumming is precise and º ³ ³º tight. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º As the album title would suggest, Dystopia is º ³ ³º chock full of songs about Dave Mustaine’s bleak º ³ ³º view on the state of America and how it’s all º ³ ³º going to hell if we don’t change it. Some might º ³ ³º find it overbearing, but some of Dave’s best º ³ ³º lyrics have been rooted in his views on º ³ ³º conspiracy and government. Whereas past attempts º ³ ³º at commercial metal like Super Collider often º ³ ³º featured lyrics that were bland and uninspired, º ³ ³º Dave is far more motivated this time around now º ³ ³º that he doesn’t need to write songs to play on º ³ ³º the radio. There is still some variety as well, º ³ ³º as Bullet to the Brain is a story on the dangers º ³ ³º of infidelity, Poisonous Shadows deals with º ³ ³º regret and making up for past transgressions, º ³ ³º and The Emperor is either about Obama or a º ³ ³º celebrity Dave doesn’t like. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º The standard release of the album is a bit more º ³ ³º consistent musically, as the iTunes version º ³ ³º features the bonus tracks Look Who’s Talking and º ³ ³º My Last Dying Wish. Both songs are more upbeat º ³ ³º than the album’s middle, with Look Who’s Talking º ³ ³º acting as a brief respite from the album’s º ³ ³º darker material in between Poisonous Shadows and º ³ ³º Conquer or Die. My Last Dying Wish on the other º ³ ³º hand is more of the mainstream rock variety and º ³ ³º sounds like it could have been on Super º ³ ³º Collider. Look Who’s Talking is a solid song but º ³ ³º not quite as strong as the rest of the album and º ³ ³º My Last Dying Wish is pretty skippable. It was a º ³ ³º wise choice to include both songs as bonuses º ³ ³º rather than official tracks. º ³ ³º º ³ ³º Perhaps not since Peace Sells… has Megadeth put º ³ ³º out an album with such consistent top-to-bottom º ³ ³º quality (Rust in Peace had a few less than º ³ ³º stellar songs in the middle). Dave’s º ³ ³º politically-charged lyrics may not be for º ³ ³º everyone, but the band’s strength has always º ³ ³º been in its music and it’s as strong as ever º ³ ³º this time around. The bonus tracks on the iTunes º ³ ³º release are decent enough to not take away from º ³ ³º the album’s overall quality even if My Last º ³ ³º Dying Wish is rather lackluster. Overall, º ³ ³º Megadeth truly sounds rejuvenated and ready to º ³ ³º once again take on the world. By the time º ³ ³º Foreign Policy ends, there’s a good chance º ³ ³º you’re left wanting more.
