Ί ³ ³Ί Album : XI Label : Rat Pack Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Way back in 1984 I was pretty much blown away by Ί ³ ³Ί the Metal Church debut. David Wayne’s (R.I.P.) Ί ³ ³Ί air raid demon vocals were one-of-a-kind and the Ί ³ ³Ί slick, hooky writing and quasi-thrash energy Ί ³ ³Ί really won me over. While their follow up The Ί ³ ³Ί Dark was widely panned, I loved it almost as Ί ³ ³Ί much as the debut. When Wayne packed off for Ί ³ ³Ί greener pastures, I was loathe to accept the Ί ³ ³Ί band without him, until they wrangled Mike Howe Ί ³ ³Ί from Heretic and made stellar use of his leather Ί ³ ³Ί lunged roar on the amazing Blessing in Disguise. Ί ³ ³Ί I went on to love all the Howe era albums and Ί ³ ³Ί struggled mightily to get into subsequent Ί ³ ³Ί platters with Ronny Munroe standing in his Ί ³ ³Ί stead. Now 23 years after he left, Howe is back Ί ³ ³Ί for their 11th album, the cleverly titled XI. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The band he rejoins has certainly rough sailing Ί ³ ³Ί since his departure, with 2013s Generation Ί ³ ³Ί Nothing being a failed attempt to revisit their Ί ³ ³Ί early 80s speed-driven style. It ended up their Ί ³ ³Ί worst album (though I’m willing to entertain Ί ³ ³Ί arguments Masterpeace deserves that honor) and Ί ³ ³Ί things seemed to be over for the long running Ί ³ ³Ί act. Could the return of Mr. Howe breathe new Ί ³ ³Ί life into this old dog and help restore their Ί ³ ³Ί former glory? Well, it certainly can’t hurt Ί ³ ³Ί none! Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Without knowing what to expect from XI, I was Ί ³ ³Ί happy to hear the classic blue collar, hard Ί ³ ³Ί rocking sound from albums like The Human Factor Ί ³ ³Ί and Hanging in the Balance back again on opener Ί ³ ³Ί “Reset.” Howe’s remarkably unchanged bellowing Ί ³ ³Ί snarl is out in front of hooky, meaty riffs that Ί ³ ³Ί walk a fine line between traditional metal and Ί ³ ³Ί hard rock and it feels like old times all over Ί ³ ³Ί again. This sets the tone for most of what’s to Ί ³ ³Ί come as the band seems content to be themselves Ί ³ ³Ί - sometimes going balls out and other times Ί ³ ³Ί content to park and idle in hard rock loading Ί ³ ³Ί zones. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Mike Howe“Killing Your Time” uses a mid-tempo Ί ³ ³Ί chunky riff as the foundation for Howe’s pissed Ί ³ ³Ί off, acerbic rants which have just as much bite Ί ³ ³Ί as they did back in 93. The album “single” “No Ί ³ ³Ί Tomorrow” is the most like classic Metal Church, Ί ³ ³Ί sounding as if it was left over from Blessing in Ί ³ ³Ί Disguise. “Signal Path” is a very addictive Ί ³ ³Ί rocker with an interesting mood and hooky vocal Ί ³ ³Ί patterns. “Sky Falls In” is also very catchy Ί ³ ³Ί with a winning chorus and a cool, laid back Ί ³ ³Ί charm. “Shadow” has the same slithering groove Ί ³ ³Ί and swagger as “Hypnotized” off of Hanging in Ί ³ ³Ί the Balance and “Soul Eating Machine” is the Ί ³ ³Ί perfect fusion of angry, rowdy metal and hard Ί ³ ³Ί rock accessibility - all attitude, piss and Ί ³ ³Ί vinegar. Lastly, closer “Suffer Fools” is a Ί ³ ³Ί wicked stomper with a punky Overkill/Anthrax Ί ³ ³Ί feel. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The only song that doesn’t click is “It Waits” Ί ³ ³Ί which strives for an ominous and dark atmosphere Ί ³ ³Ί but comes across as languid and dull. There are Ί ³ ³Ί some minor issues with song length and editing Ί ³ ³Ί as well. Several cuts run over 7 minutes and Ί ³ ³Ί trimming would definitely increase their impact Ί ³ ³Ί (“Killing Your Time,” “Sky Falls In”). That XI Ί ³ ³Ί runs just shy of an hour isn’t optimal either, Ί ³ ³Ί despite the quality material. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The big surprises here are twofold: one is how Ί ³ ³Ί great Mike Howe sounds after nearly 25 years out Ί ³ ³Ί of the limelight. He’s lost none of the power in Ί ³ ³Ί his mid-range and he can still dial up the venom Ί ³ ³Ί quite impressively. He’s more than up to the Ί ³ ³Ί task of supplying the necessary balls and Ί ³ ³Ί attitude and he does an amazing job here. The Ί ³ ³Ί other shocker is how good the song writing is Ί ³ ³Ί this time out. I thought the writing quality Ί ³ ³Ί took a big nosedive following Hanging in the Ί ³ ³Ί Balance and most of the Munroe era albums felt Ί ³ ³Ί flat and uninspired, especially Generation Ί ³ ³Ί Nothing. This is the first time in a long time Ί ³ ³Ί Metal Church founder Kurt Vanderhoof penned a Ί ³ ³Ί consistently high quality album with songs that Ί ³ ³Ί really dig in and lay earworm larvae. His and Ί ³ ³Ί Rick Van Zandt’s riffing is simple but very Ί ³ ³Ί engaging throughout, keeping the listener tuned Ί ³ ³Ί in and fired up. I’ve always found Vanderhoof’s Ί ³ ³Ί playing to be distinctive and classy and he Ί ³ ³Ί demonstrates both throughout XI. Add in some Ί ³ ³Ί slick drumming by Jeff Plate (Savatage, Trans- Ί ³ ³Ί Siberian Orchestra) and you have some genuinely Ί ³ ³Ί badass playing from these grizzled bastards. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί This was one of my most anticipated releases of Ί ³ ³Ί 2016 and I’m thrilled it came out as solid as it Ί ³ ³Ί did. XI is the best and most consistent Metal Ί ³ ³Ί Church album since Hanging in the Balance and a Ί ³ ³Ί welcome return to ass kicking form. Hell, they Ί ³ ³Ί even managed to continue their unbroken run of Ί ³ ³Ί truly awful album covers! If you love the older Ί ³ ³Ί material, this should be a win, but any fan of Ί ³ ³Ί traditional metal will appreciate what’s going Ί ³ ³Ί on here. Welcome back from beyond the black!
