Label : Avalon Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The land of 1000 lakes has churned out an Ί ³ ³Ί abundance of melodic metal bands over the past Ί ³ ³Ί thirty years. It would be very difficult in the Ί ³ ³Ί modern metal climate to find a fan who was not Ί ³ ³Ί at least a fan of one Finnish band - whether Ί ³ ³Ί that be Children of Bodom, Insomnium, Nightwish, Ί ³ ³Ί or even Stratovarius. But included in that crop Ί ³ ³Ί is also Sonata Arctica, a band that is often Ί ³ ³Ί revered as being one of the better contemporary Ί ³ ³Ί power/symphonic metal bands there is. Given such Ί ³ ³Ί a storied career to this point, it almost seems Ί ³ ³Ί hard to believe that they are about to release Ί ³ ³Ί their ninth album ‘The Ninth Hour’. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The Ninth Hour travels its journey over 11 Ί ³ ³Ί tracks, and from the very first minute you are Ί ³ ³Ί treated to a synth-laden welcoming invitation in Ί ³ ³Ί the form of ‘Closer to an Animal’. This sets a Ί ³ ³Ί tonal mood for the beginning third of the album Ί ³ ³Ί which relies on synth, guitars and pure power to Ί ³ ³Ί bring something that sounds completely unique Ί ³ ³Ί given the current power and symphonic metal Ί ³ ³Ί landscape. The remaining two thirds of the album Ί ³ ³Ί is an alternation between this style of Ί ³ ³Ί power/symphonic metal and the slower, more Ί ³ ³Ί quietly attuned ballads that most power. Ί ³ ³Ί Musically, this album is quite damn brilliant Ί ³ ³Ί and maybe that is where the focus for the band Ί ³ ³Ί was this time around. Tracks like ‘Rise A Night’ Ί ³ ³Ί and ‘Life’ really shine through with their Ί ³ ³Ί faster tempo’s suitably managed to create an Ί ³ ³Ί ambient, yet uplifting atmosphere. On the flip- Ί ³ ³Ί side, a track like ‘Fly, Navigate, Communicate’ Ί ³ ³Ί felt very flat and bland to begin with, until Ί ³ ³Ί about the mid-way point where the band kicked Ί ³ ³Ί into gear and the song sort of took a Dr Jekyll Ί ³ ³Ί and Mr Hyde approach and it seemed like the Ί ³ ³Ί first half was written by somebody completely Ί ³ ³Ί different. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The Track placement on the album seems very well Ί ³ ³Ί thought out, as there are a number of songs Ί ³ ³Ί those chains together to create a very vivid Ί ³ ³Ί landscape for the album. The initial transition Ί ³ ³Ί from ‘Closer to an Animal’ to ‘Life’ is one such Ί ³ ³Ί example with its very up-tempo and revivifying Ί ³ ³Ί nature imbuing listeners with a sense of Ί ³ ³Ί purpose, but this in general is reflective of Ί ³ ³Ί the greater musical power of the album. Tracks Ί ³ ³Ί like ‘Fairytale’ and ‘Till Death’s Done us Ί ³ ³Ί Apart’ stand out as clear cut winners on the Ί ³ ³Ί album with their powerful musical composition, Ί ³ ³Ί vocal delivery and guitar work. While on the Ί ³ ³Ί flip-side ballad tracks ‘Candle Lawns’ and Ί ³ ³Ί ‘Among The Shooting Stars’ take a very Ί ³ ³Ί introspective and self-searching tone that Ί ³ ³Ί heightens the emotional connection that many Ί ³ ³Ί will have with these tracks. Given that the band Ί ³ ³Ί does excel at a few different styles of songs, Ί ³ ³Ί the careful placement of their ballads in the Ί ³ ³Ί track listing is beautiful as it treats fans to Ί ³ ³Ί a pretty rounded and ‘complete’ album. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Probably my biggest issue overall is that it Ί ³ ³Ί seems like vocalist Tony Kakko doesn’t take any Ί ³ ³Ί major risks on this offering. I’m not here to Ί ³ ³Ί say that he has to, or that he should, but when Ί ³ ³Ί you are on your ninth album most of the time you Ί ³ ³Ί don’t want to give the impression that you are Ί ³ ³Ί just ‘going through the motions’, and the Ί ³ ³Ί easiest way to do that is to take risks. Quite Ί ³ ³Ί often I found myself looking for that massive Ί ³ ³Ί power that I know his voice is capable of, but Ί ³ ³Ί found it being absent on most occasions. It’s Ί ³ ³Ί such a shame when the lyrical themes are so Ί ³ ³Ί strong on many songs that they would have Ί ³ ³Ί benefited from having some further power behind Ί ³ ³Ί their delivery. One thing that deserves a Ί ³ ³Ί special mention from this album is the guitar Ί ³ ³Ί work of Elias Viljanen. On several tracks the Ί ³ ³Ί man lays down blistering solo after blistering Ί ³ ³Ί solo that just embody not only the power and Ί ³ ³Ί symphonic metal genres, but melodic metal genres Ί ³ ³Ί in general. Several times I found myself Ί ³ ³Ί completely dumbfounded by what he had conjured Ί ³ ³Ί up, and it really speaks volumes when you have Ί ³ ³Ί fans waiting in anticipation for that moment Ί ³ ³Ί where they can just listen to a brilliant Ί ³ ³Ί guitarist unleash. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί I thoroughly enjoyed this album, and it hits a Ί ³ ³Ί lot of marks that most albums in the Ί ³ ³Ί ‘symphonic/power’ genre miss these days. With Ί ³ ³Ί that being said, I still found that it missed an Ί ³ ³Ί integral piece that would have propelled it from Ί ³ ³Ί being a ‘good’ album to a ‘great’ album. There Ί ³ ³Ί are a lot of good songs on here but nothing that Ί ³ ³Ί really gripped me as being revolutionary which Ί ³ ³Ί made the album a little underwhelming in places, Ί ³ ³Ί while redeeming it in others. I’m not by any Ί ³ ³Ί stretch of the imagination saying that this is a Ί ³ ³Ί terrible album, because those comments couldn’t Ί ³ ³Ί be further from the truth - but I do think that Ί ³ ³Ί more could be done to expand on this sound given Ί ³ ³Ί the current crop of power and symphonic metal Ί ³ ³Ί bands.s Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Is this a good album? Sure it is, but to those Ί ³ ³Ί that aren’t already fans, the album doesn’t do a Ί ³ ³Ί whole lot to draw and engage them in. While Ί ³ ³Ί composed and written beautifully, with sublime Ί ³ ³Ί guitar passages included, it feels like most of Ί ³ ³Ί the songs just ‘plot the course’ and don’t Ί ³ ³Ί really channel massive effort and power that Ί ³ ³Ί might engage new fans. This is definitely one Ί ³ ³Ί for the fans, but for anyone else that’s Ί ³ ³Ί interested in ridiculous guitar solos, or Ί ³ ³Ί brilliant musical composition, this is one for Ί ³ ³Ί you to check out!
