[img(width=316 height=60)]links/images/splogo.jpg[/img] Kid Criole is August Darnell Browder who used to be in Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. In the early 1980s he formed the Coconuts with his wife, Adriana 'Addy' Kaegi and Andy 'Coati Mundi' Hernandez. It's hard to describe this interesting vocal group, but they have maintained a loyal following for a couple decades now Growing up in the melting pot of the Bronx, Darnell was exposed early on to all kinds of music. Darnell began his musical career in a band named The In-Laws with his half-brother, Stony Browder Jr., in 1965. The band disbanded so Darnell could pursue a career as an English teacher. He taught at Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School in Hempstead, New York after studying English and drama at Hofstra University. He later claimed that he established a musical career because he was a "frustrated actor".[4] In 1974, again with Stony Browder, he formed Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, becoming its lyricist and bass player. The band combined swing and Latin music with disco rhythms and had its biggest hit in 1976 with "Cherchez La Femme". Darnell and Browder were a visionary songwriting and production team and Daye an astonishingly underrated vocalist. Their long out of print recordings are masterpieces that defy genre, musically intoxicating, with an almost dreamlike sonic density that (to name the most obvious)combines 1940s swing, soul, 'disco', Latin, and rock 'n' roll into something utterly original. The songs are richly allusive and almost too smart to reach a wide audience.
