Nine Inch Nails, commonly abbreviated as NIN, is an American industrial rock band that was formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1988. The band consists of producer and multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor, as well as English musician Atticus Ross. Reznor recorded and released the band's debut album, the synth-pop oriented Pretty Hate Machine (1989), under TVT Records to minor success.
In 1997, Reznor appeared in Time magazine's list of the year's most influential people, and Spin described him as "the most vital artist in music". The Recording Industry Association of America certified sales for 10.5 million units of the band's albums in the United States, which accounted for roughly half of the band's reported sales worldwide at that time. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine placed The Downward Spiral at No. 200 in a 2003 list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time,[267] and by the following year ranked Nine Inch Nails at No. 94 in their The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list.

It is retrospectively considered by critics and fans alike to be among frontman Trent Reznor's best work, as well as one of the most important albums of the 1990s.
This album starts hard and doesn't let up. Every song is powerful (and sometimes disturbing) on some level. It's probably not an album to listen to early in the morning to get yourself 'pumped up' for the day.
The second bonus disc is a collection of remixes and B-sides and also includes a stereo SACD layer in addition to the Redbook CD layer. The last three tracks on the bonus disc are previously unreleased demo recordings from the original album
