April 1948 in St. Catherine, Jamaika als James Chambers) ist ein jamaikanischer Reggaekünstler, der durch Songs wie Many Rivers to Cross vom Soundtrack-Album The Harder They Come bekannt wurde und mit diesen am weltweiten Durchbruch der Reggaemusik beteiligt war. Lieder von Jimmy Cliff wurden von vielen Künstlern weltweit in Coverversionen aufgenommen. Unter anderem spielt Bruce Springsteen eine Version von Cliffs Trapped seit 1981 auf vielen Konzerten; von 1992 bis 1993 war Cliffs Many Rivers to Cross ebenfalls Bestandteil von Springsteens Liveauftritten. Cliffs You Can Get It If You Really Want aus der Filmmusik zu The Harder They Come wurde für Desmond Dekker ein internationaler Hit. Hall-of-Famer Cliff is no ordinary artist. "Follow My Mind" is one of his best accomplishments. While the characteristic heavy beat and "One Drop" bass of reggaie does not come close to Bob Marley's, Cliff's legendary voice makes it a timeless piece to own. You can find a song for every mood, every occasion. Had Cliff stayed true and constant like he did on "Follow My Mind", perhaps would he be enjoying the international stardom that the scope of his talent truly suggests (Vietnam, The Harder They Come and Many Rivers To Cross remain Jimmy Cliff's best known songs). This is way before Jimmy ventured into the cheezie 80's pop sounds. Great version of No Woman No Cry and chock full of outstanding songs.
