Jo-Ann Campbell was born in Jacksonville, Florida, July 20, 1938. In 1942 when she was only four years old she entered a music school and when she entered Fletcher High School in Jacksonville, she was an accomplished drum majorette, winning many honours. She obtained a contract with Eldorado Records after appearing at Harlem's Apollo Theatre in 1956. After finding nothing suitable to record, Jo-Ann wrote a song titled "Come On Baby" and released it in 1957 on Eldorado Records. She also appeared on Jocko's Easter Show in New York that year, followed by an engagement with Alan Freed at the Brooklyn Paramount. Changing record companies, she released "Wait A Minute" on Gone Records in December of 1957. It was also at this time that she made numerous appearances at the Brooklyn Paramount and on Dick Clark's American Bandstand Show in Philadelphia. She also appeared in the movie "Go Johnny Go" singing two songs. After having released seven singles on Gone (six of these singles were later released on the END LP "I'm Nobody's Baby") she switched labels again, releasing "Kookie Little Paradise" on ABC Records in the fall of 1960.
