Rock

The Dictators ist eine 1973 in New York City gegr�ndete US-amerikanische Rockband. Durch ihren laut und schnell gespielten Rock ’n’ Roll gilt sie als einer der Vorl�ufer des Punkrock.
Gef�rdert durch den Musikjournalisten Richard Meltzer nahmen die Dictators 1975 ihr Deb�talbum The Dictators Go Girl Crazy! auf, das von Sandy Pearlman und Murray Krugman produziert wurde. Kommerziell war dieses Album eine Entt�uschung, von Musikkritikern wird es jedoch als eines der wichtigsten Alben dieser Periode angesehen. Die Band l�ste sich dennoch als Reaktion f�r ein paar Monate auf, um jedoch 1976 wieder zusammenzukommen; diesmal zun�chst ohne Andy Shernoff, mit Mark „The Animal“ Mendoza als Bassist. Shernoff kehrte etwas sp�ter als Keyboarder zur Band zur�ck. In dieser Besetzung nahmen sie 1977 ihr zweites Album Manifest Destiny auf, wieder produziert von Pearlman und Krugman, die durch ihre Arbeit f�r Blue �yster Cult bekannt geworden waren.

A forgotten ground zero for punk rock, this is the bridge between power pop and punk. Go Girl Crazy! is still one of the coolest albums most folks have never heard. Nimbly toeing the line between heavy metal, punk rock and comedy, the ’Tators sang the praises of cars, girls, weekends, wrasslin’ and White Castle sliders. They crafted hilariously tasteless tongue-in-cheek efforts like Back To Africa and Master Race Rock (“We are the members of the master race / Got no style and we got no grace”). Plus they weren’t too proud to raid their little sisters’ 45s for I Got You Babe and California Sun. And they did it all with plenty o’ crunching guitar, pounding drums and boisterous confidence. So maybe they ain’t the next big thing. But they’ll do till it comes along.
