AllMusic called them "One of funk's most progressive outfits... [with an] expansive, eclectic vision." Mandrill songs have been sampled by many hip-hop acts such as Johnny D, Public Enemy, Beck, DJ Shadow, Shawty Lo, Big L, Kanye West, Jin, Eminem, The Avalanches, and 9th Wonder. What an incredible album. The arrangements vary between the hard driving Funk of that era to latin tinged elements of Disco, die hard Mandrill fans will find this to be a very funky addition to the collection. Sure, there's a couple of mediocre tracks, but the first two a stone-cold bangers. The guitar in Funky Monkey separates the boys from the men. Happy Beat is a jolly little jam.
