Progressiverock

Scottish progressive rock band founded in Glasgow in 1969- Disbanded in 1975 - Reformed briefly in 1980 and again in 2007.
This band was from Scotland, their name is derived from a novel by the poet John Gray in 1728. The musicians of BEGGARS OPERA were Martin Griffiths (vocals), Rick Gardiner (guitar and vocals), Alan Park (keyboards), Gordon Sellar (bass, acoustic guitar and vocals), Virginia Scott (Mellotron and vocals) and Raymond Wilson (drums and percussion). BEGGARS OPERA made a lot of records but remained acting in the shade of most progressive rock bands.
Their debut-album "Act one" ('70) contains fluent and tasteful organ driven progrock with powerful "Sixties" sounding guitarwork.
Griffiths sang and was compere in the working men's clubs in and around Manchester until he left for Germany in 1974. He went on tour and worked with Brian Auger, Osibisa, Ekseption, Klaus Doldinger, Ange and Can before signing a recording contract with Jupiter Records (Ralph Siegel) releasing three singles: "I’ll Be Coming Home", ”Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" and "Israelites", which reached number 3 in the German Disco Charts in 1977.

The first half of the album tends to focus on the use of subtle dissonances and dampened challenging features, at times reminding slightly of King Crimson and at others actually sounding a bit like Rush, especially on the number Frozen on an Eye.
After this effort we're served four even more elaborately made creations, of the kind that I have marked down as brilliant stuff but not describable. Art rock for sure, challenging, but no direct references in terms of associations or subgenre placement easily made. 
In all, a second excellent album from the reformed and redefined Beggar's Opera. While leaning more towards simpler song structures, the arrangements remain inventive and captivating.
