Progressiverock

Scottish progressive rock band founded in Glasgow in 1969- Disbanded in 1975 - Reformed briefly in 1980 and again in 2007.
This band was from Scotland, their name is derived from a novel by the poet John Gray in 1728. The musicians of BEGGARS OPERA were Martin Griffiths (vocals), Rick Gardiner (guitar and vocals), Alan Park (keyboards), Gordon Sellar (bass, acoustic guitar and vocals), Virginia Scott (Mellotron and vocals) and Raymond Wilson (drums and percussion). BEGGARS OPERA made a lot of records but remained acting in the shade of most progressive rock bands.
Their debut-album "Act one" ('70) contains fluent and tasteful organ driven progrock with powerful "Sixties" sounding guitarwork.
Griffiths sang and was compere in the working men's clubs in and around Manchester until he left for Germany in 1974. He went on tour and worked with Brian Auger, Osibisa, Ekseption, Klaus Doldinger, Ange and Can before signing a recording contract with Jupiter Records (Ralph Siegel) releasing three singles: "I’ll Be Coming Home", ”Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" and "Israelites", which reached number 3 in the German Disco Charts in 1977.

Gardiner's time with David Bowie comes to mind on the opening "How She Swam" which to these ears is reminiscent of "Heroes" or "Ashes to ashes". Virginia Scott's vocals are highly effective while Gardiner adds some atmospheric lead guitar to a fine introductory song. The quasi title track " Tomorrows Thinking" opens with further appealing lead guitar on the slightly extended intro. The song itself is rather twee, the call and response female vocals being a little tacky.
"Those Echoes" is (just) the longest track at a shade over 5 minutes. Like the majority here, it could perhaps have been augmented through further instrumental development, the accent leaning too heavily towards the vocals. 
Art rock with strong symphonic tendencies, liberally flavored with space-tinged textures in rich arrangements, in some respects comparable to Pink Floyd.
