Funk

The Brides of Funkenstein are an American funk musical group originally composed of singers Dawn Silva and Lynn Mabry. Previously background singers for Sly Stone, Mabry and Silva joined the P-Funk collective in the mid-1970s. George Clinton named the group (based on a storyline and characters from the Parliament album The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein). The Brides' provided the vocals for the 1977 album Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs by P-Funk guitarist Eddie Hazel. Clinton produced the Brides' debut album, Funk Or Walk, for Atlantic Records in 1978. The album was a success, selling over three hundred thousand copies within the first week as well as winning a Record World award for best new female group.[citation needed] The album charted at #7 on the R&B charts; the single "Disco To Go" was certified gold in America and reached platinum status in Europe and Asia. The duo became an opening act for Parliament-Funkadelic tours and also performed backing vocals for the ensemble itself.

Funk or Walk is the debut album by the Brides of Funkenstein. The album was produced by George Clinton with the exception of the album's first single "Disco To Go" which was written and produced by Clinton and Bootsy Collins. The Brides of Funkenstein consisted of Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva, who were members of Sly and the Family Stone prior to joining P-Funk. Funk Or Walk earned Mabry and Silva a Record World Award for Best New Female Artists and Best New R&B Group in 1979. The song was originally performed live by Bootsy's Rubber Band. To this day, the P-Funk All Stars continue to play "Disco To Go" in their live concerts. The Brides of Funkenstein also toured and recorded with Parliament/Funkadelic around this same time. Funk or Walk tends to be very Clinton-flavored. But the record is surprisingly diverse, and Clinton keeps things unpredictable. "Birdie," "Amorous," and the infectious opener "Disco to Go" (which Clinton wrote and produced with Bootsy Collins) are all very Parliament-like, but the jazz-influenced "Nappy" isn't unlike something Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band would have done. The melancholy "Just Like You" is a conventional soul ballad, and the glossy "When You're Gone" would have been appropriate for a Silver Convention album. On Funk or Walk, the Brides' two-woman lineup consists of Dawn Silva and Lynn Mabry, both demonstrating that they have no problem handling the variety of things that Clinton sends their way.
