Krautrock

Eela Craig war eine österreichische Rockband, die zu Beginn der 1970er Jahre progressive Rockmusik mit Jazz, Klassik, elektronischer Musik und christlichen Texten verband. Der Bandname ist ohne jede weitere Bedeutung.
Die Gruppe wurde 1970 in Linz gegründet. Im Sommer 1971 wurde die erste Langspielplatte Eela Craig in einer Auflage von 1.500 Stück eingespielt, die unter den Kritikern zu Vergleichen mit etablierteren Bands wie Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Gentle Giant oder Colosseum führte. 
Das christliche Konzeptalbum Missa Universalis von 1978 ragt besonders heraus. Es handelt sich um die musikalische Umsetzung eines Hochamtes (Feier der Heiligen Messe), das alle vorgeschriebenen Einheitstexte in lateinischer, deutscher, englischer und französischer Sprache umfasst. Die Kompositionen ähneln den Werken von Anton Bruckner; musikalisch kommen alle Elemente der Rockmusik und der elektronischen Musik zum Einsatz. Die Uraufführung dieses Werkes erfolgte auf dem Brucknerfest der Stadt Linz und rief ein überwältigendes, positives Medienecho hervor.

The band seems to be confused whether they should stick to the progressive rock they did so well in the late '70s or go a more commercial direction. "Beecher's Brook" definitely shows the band wanting to go back to the funky styles of One Niter, similar funky jam with clavinet, but as the album goes on, you could tell it's one half the band wanting to follow their own direction, and the other record company pressure. "Love to Hate You Baby" is a misguided venture into disco, with vocoderized vocals. "Lions Covering the Beaches" aren't too bad, reminding me of the more calm moments of Missa Universalis. Virgin Oiland has its moments, and has some good material as well as some questionable material. So this one too approach with caution.
